You need a reliable internet connection for your business. Services which used to be installed on premise are now increasingly hosted and managed in the cloud. This change has resulted in demand for faster connections and for resiliency where a backup service is immediately available if the primary service fails. Knowing whether a circuit is performing well for you is more important than ever. Plum Communications data monitoring allows you ability to view your connection status and report on how it has performed historically. You can set email alerts to notify of dropped connection or slow response.
Choosing between ADSL, FTTC, FTTP or Leased Line
Plum Communications can provide you with a choice of connection for your premises. If you require an uncontended service with high bandwidth and a managed service and you have multiple users then a leased line is probably your best choice. If however you have a limited number of users and cost is an issue then ADSL or FTTC may be suitable. Some premises can only have fibre connections and for those we recommend FTTP where Leased Line is not suitable due to cost.
ADSL – Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line speeds up to 24Mbps download and 1.2Mbps upload contended service delivered over copper wire to the premises
FTTC – Fibre to the Cabinet is a variant of ADSL with speeds up to 80Mbps download and 20Mbps upload contended service delivered over copper wire to the premises with fibre from exchange to the cabinet
GFAST – is an acronym of G Fast Access to Subscriber Terminals where G refers to the series standard and is a higher speed version of FTTC with speeds up to 330Mbps download and 50Mbps upload contended service delivered over copper wire to the premises with fibre from exchange to the cabinet
FTTP – Fibre to the Premises is a variant of ADSL with speeds up to 1000Mbps download and 115Mbps upload contended service delivered over fibre to the premises from the exchange (full fibre)
Leased Line – Dedicated fibre connection to the premises, uncontended service with speeds up to 10Gbps.

SoGEA or FTTP
SoGEA is an acronym for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access and is ADSL or FTTC delivered over copper wire to the premises but without the voice circuit so it cannot be used for telephone calls unless a VOIP phone service is ordered.
If you require a faster service choose fibre to the premises (FTTP) if it is available. This is data only and is provided over fibre to the premises. The UK national infrastructure is being upgraded by 2025 and after that date all new supplies will be on FTTP or where that is not available SoGEA. Plum Communications has partnered with major carriers to roll out SoGEA and FTTP throughout the UK.
Leased Line
Leased line or ethernet connection are usually delivered over fibre and provide a symmetric connection with speed up to 10Gbpsm in each direction. Customers can choose a managed router and backup circuit in addition to the primary leased line. Price is dependent upon carrier infrastructure in the customer location. Plum Communications has partnered with multiple carriers to supply leased line services throughout the UK and provides a monitoring service for data connections.

I am still in a contract for broadband, but can I still get a quote or change providers before my contract is up?
Yes – you can still get a quote off a new provider even if your currently still in a contract and you can change provider even if your contract is not up yet, however you will be charged outstanding term fees by your current provider.
Will I still be guaranteed the same standard of broadband service with Plum Communications as my current provider?
Yes, like for like the products are similar however Plum monitors every connection and allows you to view status on line, each circuit has a static IP address and an in house support team.
If I order broadband will I be in a contract and if so how long will my contract be for?
A new broadband contract with Plum is typically 12 months although we can arrange short term contracts if required.
How many types of broadband are there?
There are many types of internet connection referred to as broadband. Plum Communications provide ADSL, ADSL2+, FTTC, SoGEA, FTTP, leased line over copper, leased line over fibre.
How long does the installation of broadband take?
It depends on the product chosen, we can advise on this during the sales process.
Which broadband is best for a small business?
Depending on company size FTTP or FTTC are recommended and for high volume data needs leased line.
How will I know if my location has access to fibre broadband?

What's the difference between download and upload speeds?
Download speed refers to how fast the data can be transferred from the internet to your computer, while the upload speed refers to how fast the data can transfer from your computer to the internet. In the context of business, upload would determine the quality of your calls whilst download would determine how fast you recieve data packets such as files from the internet or the number of calls you can take simultaneously from clients.
What's the difference between ADSL2+, FTTC and FTTP?
ADSL2+ utilises copper wiring to both the cabinet and premises to deliver your internet speed. FTTC (Fibre to the cabinet) utilises fibre optic cables to the cabinet, whilst using copper wiring to the premises. FTTP uses fibre for all parts of the connection.
How can I monitor my broadband circuits?
By using Plum Highlight, a service available to all of our customers that allows you to check the stability of your broadband.
