A router is used to connect your devices to an internet connection. Even if the internet connection is supplied with a managed router it may be necessary to connect a separate router behind that to provide you with control over how devices can access and communicate.
A router has multiple functions and will often provide authentication to the host network, network address translation, device configuration, DNS lookup, WIFI connectivity and firewall management although in some cases these functions may be carried out buy other network devices.
